My favorite Nightwish album,
This review is from: Once (Audio CD)
Nightwish is my favorite heavy metal band. I discovered them a couple of years ago when I saw an advertisement for "Wishmaster". Out of curiousity, I ordered the album and was immediately hooked. I have been a fan for almost three years now. Living in the US, it is not easy getting my hands on the band's albums. I ordered their lates album "Once" as an import over the summer. It definitely was worth the money shelling out.
"Once" is by far the most aggressive album the band has ever put out. Emppu's guitars are more upfront than they ever been on past albums. You definitely can tell through songs like "Wish I Had an Angel", one of my personal favorite songs on the album. "Wish I Had an Angel" kicks off with Tarja and Marcus' vocals and really sets the tone of the song. Tarja's clean, operatic vocals really complements with Marcus' more rougher-style of singing. A killer song. Very infectious and heavy. The first single off the album "Nemo" opens up with some of the loveliest piano melodies by Tuomas. What sets "Once" apart from the band's past albums is the diversity whether it is the more aggressive sound of Emppu's guitar style or the style of the sound. The band takes a risk by incorporating Native American music on "Creek Mary's Blood". The most orchestral and ambitious song on the entire album for me has to be "Ghost Love Score", a ten minute epic. I love that song. Tarja sounds absolutely amazing on this song. All of the songs on "Once" are classic Nightwish. I was definitely not disappointed by my favorite metal band.
