This one considering the strength of the cast, should be good, but it is Oh Dear! The sets are varying between the just OK and the non existent. Individually there are some noteable voices, Susanne Mentzner is the pick of the bunch. Deborah Voight has a delightful voice, but for much of the performance might have been in a concert performance. Similarly Bacchus, Richard Margison looked out of place but sounded allright. I was suprised by Dessay, I usually love her voice and performance, but she seemed out of place and not in the character, the occasional asides to the audience did not help. The nymphs voices blended nicely but the 20ft tall girls sliding round the stage were offputting. Zerbinettas four suitors appeared ragged and disjointed. There are far better versions available. The Deutch grammaphon with Battle and Norman, or in monochrome with Reri Grist as Zerbinetta, who captures the character in a definitive performance, the 1965.Wiener Philharmoniker to name but two.
