An invaluable guide for everyone supporting survivors of abuse,
This review is from: Counselling Skills for Working with Trauma (Essential Skills for Counselling) (Paperback)
There is much to praise in this excellent book by Christiane Sanderson. It is not just authoritative, it is blessedly accessible and, as is always the case with work from this immensely experienced therapist and consultant, it is a pleasure to read. The uniquely valuable feature of Counselling Skills is its coverage of the challenges posed by the symptoms of complex trauma, including the role of dissociation and problems posed by attachment and relational difficulties. It is essential reading for those working with survivors of any kind of abuse, including childhood sexual abuse, but its message should be broadcast more widely. Teachers, lawyers, doctors and probation officers should read this book, as should everyone to whom survivors might turn for informed support. Christiane also provides compassionate down-to-earth advice on practitioner self-care. Altogether it will be an invaluable guide to those involved in this demanding field.
