4.0 out of 5 stars Don't expect excitement, 30 Aug. 2013
This review is from: The Iceman [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
First of all the Iceman is not a serial killer, he is a hit man for the Mob. This is not an exciting film, more of a docudrama although it looks very authentic and the cast of well known actors does a very good job.
The story follows the life of Richard Kuklinski who works in a porn lab till he is discovered by the local mob boss played in usual menacing style by Ray Liotta and recruited as a stone cold killer. Michael Shannon is so convincing in the role that it is hard to imagine him playing anything else. The real Kuklinski is believed to have killed over a hundred people but the death toll in this film is a lot lower.
Watch out for Chris Evans and David Schwimmer playing well out of their normal fields and doing a great job of it.
You'll probably enjoy this most if you're into organised crime dramas.

Hi PJ, I like your review but would like to challenge the fact that you say he is not a serial killer - probably because it's the title of my review!

He has found a constructive vent of employment for it. He clearly slits a man's throat outside a bar for insulting his (future) wife, that was not a Mafia contract. Then during the prison visit to his brother, his brother reveals he killed a kid with a shower-curtain pole as a child. I would say he is a pretty disturbed character before he was picked up by the Mafia which allowed him to express his murderous desires. I have read the book as well, well before I even heard this was being made into a film and it does clarify that Richard Kuklinski is/was a serial killer. It was just he had a stream of targets that nobody would miss and the money was practically incidental.
