Customer Review

I found Jo Nesbo very similar in writing style to Dan Brown, which may account for his success. Although Nesbo does not have the impressive background and historic details of a Brown novel it has a relatively interesting story and is a page turner to read. However, (along with Brown) I find Nesbo's writing style like he has learnt to write dialogue and characters from watching bad television cop shows. Maybe something has been lost in translation, but the dialogue is very stilted, predictable, cliched and based not in reality but where you would hear it everyday in an episode of CSI or Miami Vice. In the darkest of moments characters are making inappropriate quips to each other which is just infuriating. The main character Harry Hole is predictably a drunk, disheveled, relationship-car-wreck, nearing retirement, embarrassment to the force who sometimes produces great work.... this seems to be a character lifted from ANY other crime thriller or detective TV drama??! The plot is littered with obvious red herrings and paper thin supporting characters who have no consistency in tone. Like I say, it is enjoyable as it's a simple, easy, mindless detective novel which does what is on the tin, but delivers nothing more. If you want an original crime novel, with a great style of writing and authentic characters, try a John Le Carre. They may not be as effortless to read, but that's the point - they deliver or many more levels than this...
