I have no doubt that this landmark PIR box set deserves huge sales - the full track listing is posted above. No stand alone collection is ever going to contain everything worthy of our ears and money, but this one gets pretty close. On the subject of money, I'd have much preferred to see the inclusion of the full length version of the O'Jays' For The Love Of Money, or their brilliant Sunshine, to the sacrifice of the God-awful Strut Your Funky Stuff, which, in my opinion, belongs in the toilet of disco hell. You don't cut quality tracks like that, ever! But hey, that's one of only a few tarnished moments for me - together with the somewhat random album vs single length of the included tracks. Anyway, these are forgivable disappointments, as this is still a box of soulgasmic bliss, and the ups far outweigh any downs. The Philly musical vaults are vast and the majority of our personal favorites are included here, but Ralph Tee, Ian Dewhirst and the PIR brigade went beyond themselves by including many lesser known treasures, which they've lovingly dusted off and made ready for our music players. Overall this is a very worthy collection and a job well done. But back to the subject of money. Who do I argue with about the rather hefty price tag? Surely something below £30 would have struck the right marketing note? OK, that's a personal gripe...the music involved is priceless!
So, 4 Stars for the content and a well deserved 5th for the obvious hard work by everyone involved. As for the fellow reviewer who only awarded 1 star because he mistakenly believes a bar is missing from the start of 1 of the 175 songs, brother you have issues. My thanks and appreciation to all involved and I hope you'll produce another big box of Philly goodies in due course.
