Millenium Sleaze? Yes, pleaze!!,
This review is from: Making Enemies Is Good (Audio CD)
As one of the reviewers correctly stated there isn't anything under the 'sleaze' title as good as this around now.
Since their first album 'Diesel & Power' which is also a fantastic album, they set out their stall which was a dirty and gritty sound with whisky soaked vocals and loud guitars, and you could almost imagine bar-room brawls in the background. It was a mystery to me how they didn't become big off of the back of this album (I guess the small thing called grunge may have something to do with it!).
So another album and EP down the line and this album 'M.E.I.G.' shows how they have grown and been able to sustain a strong fan base by evolving into a tighter band with even better songs.
For me the stand out tracks are 'Heaven 2.9', 'Brand New Hate', 'Ex-files' & 'The Kids are...', but it is also worth taking note that if you read the other reviews most of the songs are named as people's favourites which suggests that there aren't any fillers, and that there are songs for everyone. 'Heaven 2.9' is catchy, though more classic rock'n'roll than pop. The 'slow' songs are by no means ballads and are more in the vein of Marilyn Manson's 'Dope Show' song than say a Guns'N'Roses ballad like 'November Rain', or 'Don't Cry'.
Influences do indeed come from the likes of Hanoi Rocks, The New York Dolls and Guns'n'Roses. The song 'Star War' sounds a lot like The Toilet Boys, and as already stated by someone else 'Brand New Hate' was co written by Thw Wildhearts/Silver Ginger 5 singer Ginger.
Well done to Backyard Babies for keeping this sort of music alive (also other Swedish bands like Hardcore Superstar, The Helicopters etc.)
So to conclude, with a handful of catchy rock anthems and more than a handful of other good strong songs, then this is the album to go and buy. Whilst you're at it, why not spike your hair, get some tattoos, where sweatbands high up your arms (these guys were doing it long before Mr Timberlake decided it was cool!)and sip some JD.
