I had doubts as to how well the book could be filmed, but I loved the result. RP is great in the role of Jacob, his looks are perfect for the 1930s era, and his acting is fab. He expresses so much with his eyes, especially after he meets Marlena, played to perfection by Reese Witherspoon in Harloesque hair and makeup.
Christopher Waltz is good as August, but I believe Sean Penn would have owned the role better.
The circus scenes are just amazing, especially once Rosie the elephant arrives, she is adorable. Period detail, the cars, clothes, interiors etc are all magnificent, as is the colouring and cinematography throughout this movie. My only regret is that I didn't get to the cinema to see it on the big screen, it must have been great.
Highly recommended. Only 4 stars because I think it lost its way a little bit in the second half, the narrative seemed a bit disjointed, might have been the editing.
