Customer Review

on 15 October 2007
It's hard to believe that Wintersun began life as a side project for former Ensiferum frontman Jari and even harder to describe whats going on here with so many influences and differnt musical directions- the aggression of 80s thrash, the chilling atmosphere of black metal, the epic-ness of power metal, grindcore drumming, long, proggressive song structures a smattering of melodic death- all combined into one mind-blowing whole. you really just have to buy this album.

those expecting another folk/metal offering from Jari will be dissapointed (but not for long coz this blows Ensiferum away)as its a much more technical/extreme/prog metal affair. I guess if Empourer, Zyklon and Dark Tranquillity had a party with Stratovarius and Rush they might come up with something close to Wintersun

Multi instumentalist Jari is one of the most technically proficient artists to come out of Scandinavia in a long time. His guitar playing is so tight and varied while his solos blow me away ever time (check out winter madness) but he also knows when to be subtle and use simple chords and textures (death and healing). Subtle use of keyboards give a light symphonic/black metal edge while Kai's grindcore drumming tops everything off perfectly. The song writings is powerful, proggressive, majestic and very intelligent - a million miles away from your Nothers and your Trivium. And the icing on the cake has to be Jari's incrediable vocals. Not only does he have one of the most demonic screams in creation, he can also belt out soaring melodies and tener style melodic singing. Honestly, words can't do this album justice get out and buy it.

This is really up there with classics from Metallica, Slayer, Inflames, Iron Maiden, Blind Guardian, At the Gates, Carcass etc as one of Metal's greatest cds. Its so original, so much variety, expertly executed and with so much depth and encompassed by a chilling atmosphere that you'lll be listening to it over and over and picking up on new things. Whatever your posion is - thrash, black, melodic death, extreme, power, viking, - you'll find something in here that you can love and adore

Not only one of the best extreme metal albumns ever, one of the best metal albums ever period. Role on the next one Jari
