4.0 out of 5 stars It worked, then it failed - went read only, replacement working fine, 6 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Samsung 32GB Class 10 Micro SDHC Card Essential Class Card (Accessory)
It arrived promptly, and went in my Galaxy Note; worked fine for a day or two and then the phone said on waking: 'defective SD card' and offered me the chance to reformat it; which I did, then when I tried to mount it the phone wouldn't mount it and said it was 'safe to remove'.
The chip was now read only - so my files were still on it, and undeletable; it wouldn't format either. I tried a different micro SD in the phone and in the adapter and it worked fine in both (could delete files and format the other chip - so that eliminated a problem with the adapter); then put the micro SD into a different adapter (micro SD to USB) and tried again; it was still read only and unformattable.
Tried it in a digital camera which said 'Media defective'.
I did a Google search and found it's quite a common problem, with many 'solutions' offered, none of which worked: the most common being the little switch on the side of the adapter needs to be jammed in the unlock position (of course I tried that); I even tried a Windows registry hack; low level formatters etc. but always got the same message 'the disk is write protected'; anyone else experiencing the same problem I have wasted my time so you don't have to waste yours.
One conclusion of the Google search is that the chip is an inferior copy or a fake, although I'm sure Amazon wouldn't sell such a thing.
Fortunately nothing on it that I wouldn't want someone else to see, just a lot of music.
I have ordered another one, exactly the same as this one. Let's hope it's just a one-off.

Months later...
I received a replacement card of the exact same type and specifications as the original and it's been working fine for four months now. This suggests to me that the original card was faulty; the replacement arrived swiftly and was replaced with no quibbles. Just be careful about putting anything on a card which is your only copy (ie if you are sending your photographs to it ensure that you are also backing them up).

It's not the memory card thats the problem its your phone, the note was released before the class 10 micro sd card was released so there are compatability issues with it. Samsung even recommend a class 8 card only be used with the note on their official Ask & Answer page. I've copy and pasted the Samsung Service reply to a question on which memory card to purchase. "This model supports up to 32GB therefore we would recommend a class 8 card. As the class 10 card has only be released there may be some compatability issues."

Any ideas where 32gb class 8 micro SD cards can be purchased from? I can't seem to find "class 8" memory cards anywhere online (only 2, 6 and 10). Are they called something else in the UK or have they been discontinued? Seems odd that I can't find any trace of them.

EDIT: I've just checked the Samsung website and they don't have any class 8 memory cards listed. I wonder if, in their answer to the question that Mr P. Powell posted a quote of, they meant "class 6".

I received a replacement card of the same specifications (class 10) and it's been fine, so I would suspect the initial card was to blame, not the phone.

I received a replacement card of the exact same specifications / manufacturer etc. and it's been fine for months now, which implies that the initial card was faulty.

How can anyone rate the card that has failed a "4 star" .... is beyond me ! And it goes on .... "" a month later, I have received a replacement card "" .. ? Where do you come from ?
You do realise [I hope] that anyone who is new to Amazon and comes to read your review ... thinks ... to receive the poor quality goods is OK, as long as they replace them within month or two?

That is an utter non-sense. The class 10 Micro SD cards were around a while before the Galaxy Note phone has come out in the second half of 2011. The Samsung is just trying to cover their behind ... so that the mismatch fault lies somewhere else, not with them.

The Class 8 memory cads don't exist. There are only the class 2, 4 and 10. The class 6 was only supplied in the interim period by some manufacturers, prior to releasing the class 10 cards. If you ever see the class 8 card on sale, it will be the Chinese made fake.
