Bland and Lifeless,
This review is from: Codes and Keys (Audio CD)
I think the best way to describe this album is to imagine a compilation of all the worst songs off their previous two records. That's pretty much what this is. I accept that DCFC aren't bound to being purely a guitar band forever and taking a softer, slightly more electronic direction could work, but here it just doesn't.
The production is superb, the weakness is in the songwriting. The only song which really stands out is 'Doors Unlocked And Open'. Everything else drifts by, pleasant enough but very unremarkable middle of the road college rock which will probably please hardcore fans but won't win any new ones.
A real shame as I was looking forward to this. They've has missteps in the past but even the weaker albums have been saved by a few belting songs. Here everything has been cooked into a flawlessly produced, homogenised package that's frankly boring.
