The realistic alternative to Photoshop,
This review is from: PaintShop Pro X4 (PC) (CD-ROM)

As a user of Paint Shop Pro in the old days of Jasc Software, I have fond memories of this software franchise and happily used PSP 6 as my one and only paint package for many years. Eventually newer versions came out that were not as well received and I missed out on many versions until I recently decided to try it out again. I can happily say that the series is in good hands with Corel, and although the interface is not exactly what I remember from the old days, there are plenty of signs that this is part of that same software family that I know and love. Just simple things like the paint tube effects are great fun to use and can be used to create some really nice graphics and logos. The layer tools are pretty straight forward and easy to use and tool selection is also nice and simple. The tool settings have a much more "Photoshop" feel to them nowadays as they are positioned in the same place above the main drawing area, with tool presets present in the same place too. I suppose this is a good thing as it makes for an easy transition between the two types of software.
One thing I don't like about PaintShop Pro is the time it takes to load. It seems to take about half as long again as Photoshop, so it's not in ideal choice to use as a primary application for doing a quick photo preview, for example. For many people there is no choice to make as the sheer gulf in pricing means that PaintShop Pro is the only realistic option for non-professionals. But does that price difference reflect in the package itself? Hardly, PaintShop Pro is a fine program in its own right and, although I'm not a professional Photoshop user, I'm finding it hard to give a good reason to recommend Photoshop over this. For one thing there isn't even an undo button on the Photoshop toolbar (that really infuriates me!!!), but in PaintShop Pro it's present and correct. This is the best value paint package on the market and you shouldn't hesitate to make a purchase.
