This is an excellent book. All Colin Thubron's books are excellent. However, I found his obsession with finding obscure burial grounds and areas of former worship a little wearing after a while. Having travelled some of the Silk Road, I was a little surprised to find that there were not more descriptions of some of the towns and cities, and their inhabitants, along the route. Still, this is a personal - and therefore - subjective opinion, and overall the book is a very good read.
