This boxed set of 7 DVDs is really very good. One symphony and its documentary on each DVD plus an interesting documentary `Seeking New Shores' about Kent Nagano himself. It takes a lot to wean me from the Berlin Philharmonic with Abbado conducting but this is close. Performed in the famous Berlin Philharmonic Hall, it is very interesting to watch rehearsals of the excellent Die Deutsches Symphonie- Orchester with the deep, sensitive and artistic Nagano conducting and to listen to Nagano's educated, reasoned and calm explanations of the music and the composers. The short animated cartoons are interesting too - supposedly of the composer in question talking to friends about the musical work. Works are by Richard Strauss (Alpine Symphony) - I love this, especially as it is new to me; Schumann's 3rd, The Renish; Mozart's 41st , The Jupiter; Beethoven's No 3, The Eroica; Brahms' Symphony No 4 and Bruckner's Symphony No 8. This boxed set is educational and introduces one to some less frequently performed works. I also recommend watching the documentaries first, not afterwards as I did! The music is beautifully performed and conducted. Highly recommended.
