Check out the first paragraph of the Introduction of this book. Hmmmm!
If you wish to see the word 'hermeneutic' stated four times in one paragraph (along with the word 'interpretive' which is synonymous) then this book is for you. Just four quartets are discussed out of an output of fifteen and this book will set you back the equivalent combined cost of the Shostakovich Quartet box (temporarily uinavailable), the Emerson Quartet's box and the Borodin Quartet's Box. Shostakovich: The String Quartets Shostakovich - Complete String Quartets If you want to understand the Shostakovich Quartets read up a couple of UNBIASED Soviet histories and listen to those boxes. Otherwise: Buy it, and enjoy seeing how some people create word-mountains and obfuscation such as "Often coinciding with the asymmetrical valuation is an uneven distribution level, meaning the marked term occurs with less frequency than the unmarked term." .....to achieve some kind of doctorate-level notoriety amongst intellectual drones.
In the absence of other reviews here, would only add that if you wish for a more sympathetic angle upon this book then you might refer to Dominy Clement's review on MusicWeb.
