Really a fun book,
This review is from: Journey Into Mystery Featuring Sif - Volume 1: Stronger Than Monsters (Marvel Now) (Paperback)
This book surprisingly is a lot of fun. I have read some books by highly praised Marvel writers lately, and I can say this Kathy Immonen writes a story more entertaining than most of that. After the critically acclaimed Journey into Mystery run of Kieron Gillen starring Kid Loki this relatively new writer did the only right thing: She made something completely different. Journey into Mystery had been an anthology book since the 50s, since 1963 starring Thor. And Immonen takes the personnel Jason Aaron does not use in his ongoing Thor run, the Lady Sif, the Warriors Three, Heimdall, and tells an interesting tale from a female point of view. There are some references to Gillen in the form of the tale (a wolf and two ravens are involved in telling the story), but the tone is lighter, although the story itself has its shocking moments.
The Lady Sif is sick of lacking in power when defending Asgard over and over again, so she asks a witch to do a berserker spell on her. She returns to the court ruthless and raging, so she is banned to another dimension. Coming around Sif gains a supporting cast and meets guest stars along. The first arc comes to an astounding end and makes you long for more. This volume collects #646 to 650 of Journey into Mystery. Sorry to say that the book is cancelled after #655. So, Marvel, give this lady another ongoing book! (I mean Immonen, but I would take Sif too. If you like this, I would also recommend Immonen's Hellcat trade paperback.)
The art of Valerio Schiti is clean and crisp, nothing sensational, but always supporting the story. Recommended! Volume 2 is in my personal pipeline.
