Books which are tied into TV series have a difficult time. The TV programmes are obviously the primary task of the production team, and the books are often something of an afterthought. They are rarely very detailed, and can sometimes be downright awful. This is one of the better ones.
Whilst there is not much here that will be unknown to anyone who has an interest in the period, it does a good job of telling the story of the war in Western Europe from D-Day to the end of the war. What makes it special - and the series which I remember watching - are the first hand accounts from veterans. This is the raison d'Ítre of the whole enterprise. These veterans are the last of their generation, and their stories are very moving, sad, and sometimes quite funny. Nearly always told with that matter-of-factness that all veterans seem to have, the stories are a must-read for anyone wanting to know what the campaign was really like.
All in all, an interesting read. The formatting on kindle could be better, and if you can, read it on a device that can display the pictures properly: they don't look very good on the standard kindle.
