Kate Atkinson always writes intriguing and unusual books, and this is no exception. Ursula, her main protagonist, is a wonderfully rounded character, with exceptional insights which she tries to keep hidden from her family. We follow them all, from her birth into a large well to do family in 1910 and throughout the war years. However, this is by no means a straightforward narrative but switches around seemingly randomly, and increasingly confusingly, with contradictory options offered for the important events Ursula has to contend with. I found it difficult to put down once started.
