King's X in Best Album Since 'Gretchen' Shocker!,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: XV (Audio CD)
If - like me - you had almost given up on King's X following a string of pretty mediocre albums (Tapehead; Mr Bulbous; Manic Moonlight etc etc) listening to 'XV' will put all your doubts to bed. Simply put - this is the best album the guys have made since those heady days of 'Gretchen Goes To Nebraska'. Everything you originally loved about this band is here - and some. From the truly monstrous, speaker shaking, bottom heavy rock (Rocket Ship; Stuck); through those catchy, melodic almost 'poppy-rocky' type tracks in the same league as Over My Head 'the X' do so well (Pray; Stuck; Go Tell Somebody); to those 'spine-tinglers' where 'the X' meld gorgeous melody and quasi-spiritual lyrics (I Just Want To Live; I Don't Know; Repeating Myself).
To top it all the album contains 'Blue' which is just so damn good it is up there in my top 5 Kings' X tracks of all time. A combination of great melodic riff, heavy as hell bass, drums that drummer Jerry Gaskill seems to be hitting so hard as to almost be splitting my speaker cabs in two! The song deals with accepting what life throws at us - including the stuff hitting us 'out of the blue'. It contains these immortal chorus lines:
"You're not going crazy - everything's changing. And, if there's no change, then you'll go crazy!".
Quite simply a magical, mighty King's X album. Welcome back Doug, Ty and Jerry! Do not hesitate - buy this album!
