I'm listening to this album as I write this...one of several times that I've heard it in the week that I've received it. I can't stop listening to it. It's definitely a great return to form, while staying current with the current R&B/Hip-Hop styles, and still remaining unmistakably Luther. His trademark voice and lush arrangements are just as strong as ever.
Some of my favourite highlights are, as with most of Luther's albums, the cover songs. This time, he does TWO Burt Bacharach songs...Any day Now, and Are You There (With Another Guy). Like other cover songs that he does, he totally reinvents the song without taking away from the original essence from the original version. He's definitely one of the very few (and I don't use that lightly) that can do that with a cover song.
My personal favourite is "Love Forgot". I love this song, and it brings back the kind of ballad that he did in the 80s and early 90s albums that he did with Marcus Miller and co. There are several songs on there that use the same crew that he usually uses throughout the albums over the years, in addition to a lot of newer producers and writer, which end up bringing a nice blend of old and new.
So, in closing, I definitely have been a fan of Luther's for years, going back to Never Too Much in 1981. And I would have to say that Luther's voice, style, and demeanour on his albums are just like fine wine...they get better with age. This album is further proof to that adage.
