This review is from: Unconditional Parenting: Moving from Rewards and Punishments to Love and Reason (Paperback)
Since my daughter came along all of the mainstream advice on parenting - with naughty steps, cry it out, sticker charts and rewards has just felt uncomfortable for me. Reading this book it just made so much sense to me. The first few chapters focus on why these conventional parenting techniques just don't work, and it does feel quite challenging reading that. It feels a bit like, well what the hell AM I meant to say or do with my child? The last few chapters though give loads of really good suggestions that just make so much sense. My husband and I have both read it, and discussed it loads, and now I'm lending it to the grandparents too. It really made us think about how we were parented, and how that has affected us, and how we will try to do things differently for our child. I don't think its necessarily easy to change the way you think about parenting, but we are making small steps that feel really positive for all of us.
