3.0 out of 5 stars I'm backing up other 3 star reveiwers, 30 Oct. 2011
This review is from: Road of Bones: The Siege of Kohima 1944 - The Epic Story of the Last Great Stand of Empire (Hardcover)
I agree with the view that this book isn't great. It is OK and is a good read and I don't feel that I completely wasted my time reading it, but I don't feel fully rewarded for my effort. To back up my rating:

1. Firstly from the titles alone:'Road of Bones' subtitle 'The epic siege of Kohima 1944'. These two things are completely different and it really seems as though the publishers went for a sexy name for the book. The road of bones gets a scant mention at the end and has nothing to do with the actual siege.

2. The battle of Kohima, with intro and afterword, could really have taken up 250 pages of the book. The rest of the book is taken up with background stuff, both allied and Japanese, that is interesting; but I would say made to be relevant rather than integrally relevant.

3. I have long marvelled at what was achieved by the soldiers at the battle of Kohima, but don't feel that this book has added to that feeling. Slim sums up the achievment pretty well in 'Defeat into Victory', which if you only read one book about Burma I would recommend as the one.

On the plus side I liked the cast of characters, the photos, the section about the Naga hills. It was just too long and tried to achieve too much that wasn't all pertinent to a book about Kohima alone.
