Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: People of the Book: The Forgotten History of Islam and the West (Paperback)
I bought this book ''People of the Book: The Forgotten History of Islam and the West by Zachary Karabell '' is worth reading book and depicts the truth about Islam's golden age and rule on west. I was not aspecting that a western writer would do that justic and look through Islam's eye. Writer has done great justice and exploring and researching the history thoroughly. I reccommend any western to read this book and then ponder that Is Islam the religion of terror or peace? This book will also make you think why muslims are now called terrorist? will make you think under muslim rule christians and jews lived happilly especially Jews made homes in muslims world and took shelter wen christians were prosecuting them and muslims protected them and now what you see in Palestine/israel the same jews have turned against muslims.. all these questions has been answered by this writer, Great work.. awesome..

This is a fundementally misleading and apologist view of the relationship between Islam and "the people of the book",Christians and Jews;Zoroastrians were also included in this category but any other faith was not even tolerated. From almost the beginning of Mohammads self imposed mission to conquer the world, the Jews and Christians have been looked upon with distrust, anger and as an inferior grade of humanity. When Mohammad was basically rejected by Jews and Christians a system of persecution and cleansing took place beginning with the Jews in Arabia;the Banu Quarayza tribe was totally destroyed and others dispossessed and banished. After Mohammad's death,at his order on his death bed,Jews and Christians were expelled from Arabia. As the islamic conquests proceeded across the Christian world, the Christians and Jews were dispossesd, enslaved, butchered or made subject to dhimmitude which was a system of protection from the death that they supposedly deserved at the hands of moslems providing the contract, the dhimma was obeyed. This meant paying the Jizya,a poll tax, and a land tax. The land was confiscated and the peasantry allowed to farm in accordance with the dhimma.A series of humiliating rules were meted out to the dhimmi which was designed to make them feel despised and humbled. The rules could be changed at the will of the moslem ruler.Over the years this system, which at times was more liberal than others but always present, together with waves of Arab immigration, persecution of the dhimmi, deportation and taxation ,gradually reduced the Christian majorities to minorities living in constant fear and insecurity. There were times under more liberal rulers when the dhimmi were allowed to prosper with government posts etc. but this often roused the fury of the mob who would rampage into the dhimmi quarters.Colonialsm lessened the load of the dhimmi to some extent but even then official laws were ignored by the populace and the dhimmi were as poorly treated as usual. Now that Islam is resurgent the dhimmi laws are being renewed, not that they ever totally went away;Christians are still persecuted in Islamic countries continually.Jihad, which is the means of spreading Islam across the Dar el harb, the land of war (the non moslem countries which Islam is continually at war with in theory) is a fundamental tenet of Islam and the precursor of dhimmitude. It is important to remember that Islam has not changed in 1400 years and cannot change without compromising itself. If anyone wants a good book about this subject I recommend them to Bat Ye'or and her excellent ,academic works.

This is an excellent comment and I agree with many points: but there are several times when Jews, Muslims and Christians did co-exist and it is important to make this point. I find your comment excellent, but would it not have been more helpful as a review?

Nicholas says:
The Christians and Jews, the main victims of oppression under Muslim dhimmi laws, never lived together with Muslims as equals.Even during periods when their load was lightened ,the Christians and Jews were always dhimmi, always inferior, always subjected to restrictive and vindictive rules and regulations and lived in a state of constant insecurity because even if officially some Jews or Christians were allowed to rise within society the Muslim "street" often objected and took it upon themselves to put the dhimmi firmly (and often violently) in his place, beneath the believer;this is ,sadly ,still a feature of life for Christians living in Muslim states today. There are no Jews living in Muslim countries today as those that were left were more or less banished or fled in the late 1940s. People brought up with western values and modes of thought and understanding do find it hard to grasp the idea that a politico-religious ideology such as Islam could declare, unilaterally, war on the rest of the world that does not accept Islam as it's rationale for existing and it's political philosophy. But for Islamic literalists this is what Islam means and world domination is the goal ;anybody who challenges that goal would be subdued under the dhimma ,or killed. This was the case 1400 years ago ,it is the case now.
