This review is from: Howzat!: Kerry Packer and the Great Cricket War (Kindle Edition)
I can remember the WSC happening and wanted to know what happened behind the scenes. The book certainly does that without getting boring or bogged down in technicalities, and it certainly doesn't try to gloss over Packer's unpleasant personality who comes across as loud and bullying.
The reason for setting up WSC was Packer's bid for the tv rights to Test cricket was turned down in spite of being 7 times higher than ABC's (the Aussie BBC). WSC gave Packer 315 hours of cricket to broadcast in competition to ABC's Test coverage but the battle for tv viewers, how large audiences were or who won the ratings battle aren't mentioned. Attendance at games, especially the lack of it in year one, is a recurring theme but as the raisin d'être was tv rights, their omission leaves a hole in the story.
