You can do two things in life: sit at a desk looking out the window and wishing you were out there, or get out there. Thank heavens for Leon and his readers that he did the latter, and realised several things: that the only thing holding us back from living a full life is fear, that once you make the decision to go, that fear disappears and is replaced by the hugely gratifying discovery that people are essentially good. Well, except maybe in Iowa. He also discovered that the first time you go on an adventure, you take far too much stuff, but we all do that. A great read; funny and heartwarming, and with some hilarious lines, like comparing the Midwest to instant coffee and the magnificently dull conversations of its farmers about how many cows and horses they have. In fact, there's only one fundamental flaw in it: his love for peanut butter and jam sandwiches. Everyone knows that peanut butter and banana ones are much better.
