morbid angel were the first death metal band i ever got into when covenant came out. for me, covenant is and always be, (apart from god of emptiness) one of the best death metal albums ever. all of their albums are amazing and each one is slightly different which is why most morbid angel fans can't agree on their best album, and when i saw them live at the la2 in 2008 it was one of the best gigs i've been to and my anticipation of this album became almost unbearable.
well, now that i have it and having listened to it a few times, all there is to say is that this album is awful. now i'm all for bands putting new ideas into their music and evolving over time but this was a bad idea. first off, the drums and vocals are way too high in the mix and the guitars are way down, which is a shame because the lyrics are embarrassingly bad, who thought they'd ever hear david vincent singing "kill cop cop, kill a cop". no, i'm not joking. first time i heard this i was with my friend who burst out laughing and i was actually ashamed of morbid angel, how could they do this. i agree with other reviews, what little death metal there is on this album is rubbish, it just sounds okay because of the rest of the music sounding soooooo bad.
the one good thing about this album, is that as it sits in my cd collection, never to be played again, it will stop a certain amount of dust getting on my other cds, it deserves one star just for that.
