Suits the movie perfectly.,
This review is from: Donnie Darko [DIGIPAK] (Audio CD)
Having seen Donnie Darko many times before, I finally decided to invest in purchasing the score from Michael Andrews and upon doing so I am certainly not disappointed.
The score fits the movie perfectly. Perhaps I would not recommend listening to this CD on its own without prior knowledge of the movie as the music plays a pivotal role in the telling of the story and without the pictures to go with the music one can get rather lost.
One of the more interesting comparisons to Michael Andrews' score for Donnie Darko is with some of Radiohead's later work, from albums such as Kid A and Amnesiac (minus the lyrics, obviously). At times the music is eerie, at times dirty, yet at other times it is simply beautiful. Tracks of note on this digipak edition soundtrack are: Carpathian Ridge (which gives a perfect example of eerie this score can be), Manipulated Living (which contains the well-known 'something's about to happen' theme and Liquid Spear Waltz (which accompanies the sections of the movie involving the computer-generated portals on-screen).
Naturally, the soundtrack CD also includes the legendary "Mad World", featuring Gary Jules, which plays over the characters faces at the end of the movie after the 'event' has occurred.
All in all, I would wholly recommend this score to everybody who enjoyed or was fascinated by the masterpiece-of-a-movie that was Donnie Darko. One word of caution, however: this CD does not feature any of the 80s pop songs features in the film. They are available on a Donnie Darko score/soundtrck double album release, although it costs a fair bit more than this score CD.
