Intelligent and thoughtfully written, I absolutley adore this book and the story will stay with me for a long time. I'd bought it for just £1 so it feels like an undiscovered masterpiece.
WIthout doubt the author has researched the subject, and though harrowing in places, it gave me an insight that no history lesson at school had done - and history was one of my favourite subjects.
The story is a combination of both the spirit of human nature, and how it can overide true adversity, alongside the very depths that humans can fall to, but with wonderful characterisation throughout, and a story that envelopes you and pulls you along until the very end, you would not be disappointed. I will most definitely be reading the follow up, as well as seeking other works by Fiona McIntosh.
