First impression is excellent build quality nicely finished product. Plugged it in, fired it up with one used 700G disk. That pre used disk caused problems and I was on the verge of giving up when I tried deleting the partition the disk via a SATA caddy to USB on my PC. This fixed it and it started up, downloaded and installed its firmware, and was fully functional in about 3 hours. I installed a second disk hot and it picked it up and it automatically set it up as a mirror. The mirroring took about 8 hours but the NAS was able to be used throughout that period. I installed a third and it decided to switch from mirror to striped raid. Once again I could still read and write during the striping re-build process which took about 10 hours. So three 700Gig disks gives me 1.3TB of space with redundancy. Speed is limited by my 10/100 router but write times typically are 6 to 8Meg per second. Fan can get noisy when its under load but normal operation is very quiet. Disks can be set to spin down after a period of not being used. Remote access from the internet is easy with the free add in software, photo sharing likewise is nicely done with another free add in. You can still use port forwarding if you prefer. FTP server is built in and is easy to access from outside the LAN via port forwarding. It now sits on my WORKGROUP as a networked drive and so far (three days) is 100% reliable.
UPDATE 18th December 2012 - Three months permanently on and no errors. Accessed daily from outside the UK with no issues.
UPDATE 15th Jan 2013 - Added one more 700GIG disk, hot, no problems at all. Still faultless operation.
UPDATE 27th June 2013 - Still 100% reliable, ftp server is excellent.
UPDATE 16th Jan 2014 - Still no issues at all, still operating 24/7.
