This review is from: Heroin: A True Story of Drug Addiction, Hope and Triumph (Paperback)
I work in substance abuse services and am always on the lookout for stories of recovery from addiction, that I can recommend to my clients as inspiration and hope. I am sorry to say that this book will definitely not be on my recommended reading list. There is way too much about Julie's background, and virtually nothing about her years of addiction. I would love to meet the people who 'treated' her addiction so quickly and easily; in my experience no addiction is ever that easy to get over, so these people must be absolute miracle workers! I was disappointed in this book; I don't like giving up on books but found myself skim-reading the final third just to get it over with. I wasn't inspired by Julie's story, and it was so poorly written that I actually found I didn't much care about her story either. There are some brilliant stories of triumph over addiction out there; sadly, this is not one of them.

Hi Clare, I would love to know what books you would recommend to inspire those who are just stepping out of heroin addiction.. A young friend is just starting recovery now and any inspiration would be so supportive. Could you possibly post the titles of the best ones you've come across? Thank you so much.
