Fantastic ride into the realms of insanity!,

This review is from: Girl, Interrupted (VHS Tape)
Compared to the book, this film fares well. While it lacks some of the book's integrity, the characters are believably brought to life and actually help you picture the characters in the books mannerisms and personas.
The performances are fantastic, each actor playing their character perfectly, and its frankly surprising that more oscars werent won for this film - Angelina Jolie's being more than earned as a charismatic and somewhat scary sociopath.
Winona ryder is fantastic as Suzanna, and is totally believable in this role. The supporting cast of fellow patients are superb, each one demonstrating a perfect example of the condition they portray, with identifiable frailty behind their personalities. The acting is of such high callibur, you forget their previous incarnations in other films (a fine example being Daisy, brilliantly played by Brittany Murphy, who's most famous role was in Cluless as Tai). Whoopie Goldberg shows she can do straight acting far better than comedy as the head nurse, and the rest of the cast are infallible, perhaps with the exception of Jared Leto's character, who, being a little twinkly eyed and frankly wet, just doesnt sit right as Suzanna's pseudo-boyfriend.
There are moments when you wonder if YOU are sane if Suzanna is locked up, but that said you can really enjoy the ride! There are cringingly embarrasing moments, for example when the group are let into an ice-cream store (one of my favourite scenes - has to be seen to appreciate the chaos and hillarity!), devastating scenes (wont say - it'll spoil it!) and heart-warming sequences (my absolute favourite, where Suzanna and Lisa sing "Down-town" to a distraught Polly through a cell door - beautiful) throughout, and unlike most films, there are no scenes or characters that leave you bored. Even those inmates with few scenes are fantastic, making this film a wonderful experience (you have to watch it a few times to notice the things going on in the background!)If you have read the book, dont be tempted to avoid this by book reviews, it enhances the experience from the book, and if you havent read the book, GET THEM BOTH!!
