It's difficult to read about all the horrors inflicted on people during wartime, then sympathise with the people perpetrating the horrors. They were just doing their jobs as soldiers, just as the British were doing theirs trying to kill them, and as the war went on the balance of power went very much in favour of the British. The book details the slide into disaster as we are given the personal histories of many of the U-Boat commanders as they try to survive the increasingly poor odds, and you cant help but feel sorry for them. It mentions Das Boot several times, and anyone who has seen that film will be able to sympathise with a lot of the descriptions and actions mentioned in this book. It can be harrowing at times, but well worth a read.
