5.0 out of 5 stars Straightforward, no-nonsence, 24 Oct. 2012
This review is from: Wiring and Lighting Manual (Readers Digest) (Hardcover)
Very pleased with this book. It provides easy to read practical guidance for reasonably competent DIY-ers who want to take on basic household electrical jobs, including the up-to-date rules about electrical works.

Pete - sorry, but you are wrong. It does not include the "up-to-date-rules", it's too old.

It pre-dates the current version of the Wiring Regulations, and there were significant changes in that.

It still talks about a very early version of Part P of the Building Regulations.

It is years out of date - as I said in my review, nobody should buy it, there are up-to-date alternatives available, and really this should be withdrawn from sale.

I'm not an electrician so I bow to your greater knowledge. However, the book notes says that it was re-printed in 2011 and describes itself on the front cover as "Fully Revised Edition" and "Complies with new safety requirements, Part P of the Building Regulations" which suggests that it is up-to-date at least to 2011. If that is not the case then is it clearly misleading. I don't intend to do any complicated jobs so I think this book meets my needs for basic electrical tasks, and it well set out with clear pictures and text.

Oh good grief.

Thanks for the clarification, Pete - it looks as though Amazon have dropped a <whatver> here. I used to have a high regard for this book, and I was disappointed when it was out of print for a while, and then failed to keep up to date.

The description aginst the item on amazon.co.uk clearly says "Publication Date: 30 Sep 2005".

And when you click the "Look Inside" link, on p6 you see this:

"Since January 2005 all new domestic
wiring work in England and Wales must
comply with the requirements of a new
section of the Building Regulations, Part P,
entitled Electrical safety, covers the design,
installation, inspection and testing of
electrical work in the home."

Now - there was indeed originally a 2nd clause in Part P, P2, which required testing, but that was removed in 2006 by The Building and Approved Inspectors (Amendment) Regulations 2006, Statutory Instrument 2006/652.

So all the evidence was that this was a 2005 book which had not even been updated following a change in the law in 2006.

If it really is a 2011 book then Amazon are doing nobody any favours by concealing that.
