This review is from: Something New To Do ~ The Phillip Mitchell Songbook (Audio CD)
Song for song this has got to be one of the best soul compilations out there. That all these songs were penned by one man- Phillip Mitchell- makes it even better.I have a few of the Kent compilations and good as some are, never have I felt, as I do with this CD, that every performance was superb and as good as the one before. The sequencing is brilliant, and the compilers decision to opt for the less well know cover version keeps the CD sounding fresh (for ex 'It Hurts so Good' here is by Katie Love & the Four Shades of Black, rather than the too well known version by Millie Jackson). And it says something about a CD when you come towards the end and think - oh it cant get any better- and then come to Track 21 and hear a singer called Tommie Lee sing 'That's the Way I Wanna Live my Life'- will leave you feeling amazed. So moved was I by this CD that I have bought Phillip Mitchell's own albums (alas, only the 2 Atlantic albums from the late 70's, and a CD worth of previously unreleased stuff from the 60's) and why, given his beautiful voice and talent he never made it big is mystifying. It tells you success in the music business has less to do with talent, and hell of a lot to do with how big your record company was and what budget they had to promote you.
