I feel violated. As though someone reached into my purse or picked my pocket.
This book is apparently (according to the forward) a haphazard compilation of Aaron Shephard's newsletters. And when I mean haphazard - I mean a blithering mess. There is not a shred of coherence to the order in which the information is delivered.
And on the subject of information - well, there really was none. There are about 5 pages devoted to the craft and conventions of writing children's books. And most of the information given there seems intended for novice level writers of such little understanding of the craft that they really shouldn't even attempt to pen a letter to their nan.
And the glossary of helpful publishing terms! Only buy this book if you need help defining such industry technicalities as: Book Club Religious Publisher (as though not self explanatory)
and........wait for it........ bookstore.
He feels the need to define for me what a bookstore is. Because apparently they don't have those in the rock I live under.
And post it notes rather than cover letters? WHAT? Really?
I am gonna give that nugget of wisdom a miss.
Only buy this book if you are so daft about writing that you probably shouldn't do it.
Edited to add: Upon further inspection - this book is print on demand self published.
He is such an expert on publishing - he couldn't even find a publisher to pick up this book.
