Much Much better,
This review is from: Nintendo Handheld Console - Blue (Nintendo 3DS XL) (Console)
I had an original 3ds at launch and was quite happy with it. But i had issues with the machine. The top screen got scratched by the bevel on the lower screen. The unit was hard to hold onto after long play periods due to the edges pressing into your hands. The 3D was good but the screen was too small.
I'm glad to say all these issues have been sorted out with the XL. The 3D is now much better due to the larger size screen although the sweet spot for viewing 3D seems to be a little tighter than on the original 3DS. I found myself adjusting the unit to find the sweet spot more than i did with 3DS. But the bigger screen is a godsend, it's almost as large as the screen on PS Vita. Also the larger touchscreen is great, due to the improved size of the unit the bottom touchscreen is now manageable with finger presses instead of using the stylus, think mobile phone. The unit is much heavier than a 3DS which is kinda nice, it sits in the hands much better now. The redesign of the casing also brings some positives. The case is now slightly rounded so there are no sharp edges to poke into your hands. The buttons are much better now especially the home buttons which are now real buttons as opposed to the older model.
There are some negatives. You get no charger with this unit. So if you traded in your old 3DS you are likely to have also traded in the charger, so it's not likely you have one knocking about. Most people will have to pay extra for a charger, this is not a deal breaker as you can buy a charger for about 6 quid. Also missing from this package is a charging cradle, now this one i kinda miss. Dropping my 3DS into the cradle was so easy and looked much better amongst my other gaming thingies. You can buy a cradle but only in a package with a charger that you bought already. Another downside is due to the larger screen things can get a little pixelated with jaggies all over the place. This is unavoidable really, things still look great on the screens. Well everything except photos that is, photos are now a grainy mess due to the larger top screen. One last downside would be the stylus which is not the cool metal extendable version, instead it's just cheap plastic which is a shame.
Overall this is a great machine and much better than the original 3DS. There is no real reason why you should not buy this XL version instead. Worth the extra money i just wish Nintendo had included a charger and cradle so it felt more like a complete package.
