This review is from: Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Two Disc Ultimate Edition) [DVD] (DVD)
After delivering the low budget, gothic suspense thriller "The Terminator" (1984), James Cameron's Career was truly launched. After the success of the film, studios now trusted him to create a series of higher budget sci-fi action films. It was "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" (1991) however, that firmly established him as a master of sequels. Not many sequels can be actually considered 'better' than their predecessors, but Cameron proved not only with T2, but also possibly 'Aliens' (1986) that it is possible to produce an exceptional sequel.
Instead of giving 'more of the same', like most sequels, Cameron gives the second film a radical new angle. Casting Arnie as the Hero T800 was a pleasant surprise. The Action was pumped up and the explosions and gunfire in the first was no match for T2. Stan Winstons and ILM's special effects stunned audiences at the time, and still do today.
However, these elements are not just what made the sequel 'better' than the first. T2 kept the strong moral issues that the first film had. It had a perfect balance to it that many sequels fail to deliver. Most importantly, the film said so much about "the value of human life".
From the blazing images of the future wars to the stunningly poignant finale, T2 is not just an Action/Sci-fi flick. It is a movie in its own right, not just a sequel. James Cameron's efforts still amaze. If only he would make more films like this today, instead of farting around in the Atlantic ocean making documentaries about the Titanic.
