A new take on military/fantasy fiction,

Control Point is an engaging, fun read that draws upon both military action and a unique take on fantasy that makes me wonder why I hadn't seen anything like this before?. Cole's book essentially asks what happens when you take the U.S. Army and drop them into a fantasy world where the rules are different? The main characters in the novel are magic users, but they aren't in Narnia or Middle Earth - they're right here in the USA.
The novel starts strong and stays strong. Unlike most high-concept novels, this novel drops you right in on the action. There isn't a lot of exposition because readers should already be familiar with the two major points of the story: the military and high-fantasy-style magic. We know how orders and squads work, even if it's just from watching TV, and we know how magic works because, well, it's magic.
So with that out of the way, Cole dumps readers right into the middle of it and never lets go. Shadow Ops is consistent and it all flows very well. The author really knew what he was doing when he put this one together. It's obvious he knew what he wanted out of the book, and apart from a few weakmpoints here & there, he generally acheives his goals.
