Customer Review

Blood And Bone is William Lashner's first stand-alone thriller, and involves an unemployed slacker who finds himself enmeshed as a suspect in a murder case when his father's former law partner is murdered. Overall, my reaction to Blood And Bone is somewhat mixed. On the positive side, Lashner's plot is very fast-paced and and involves some interesting twists and turns. Further, while the story line is at times contrived, I think you'll find it is entertaining and written in a style that will keep you engrossed enough to see what happens next. It is a good choice for a plane ride or a vacation while relaxing at a pool or beach. These positives, however, were almost equally offset by some negatives in the areas of characterization and dialogue. In my opinion Lashner has the main character wallowing too much in his own self-pity and his other characters are very thinly developed, with some bordering on stick-like figures. I felt that I never really got to know and understand these characters well enough; and, thus, never cared much about them. Further, the dialogue Lashner has his characters speak comes across at times as just too glib and hip, and at other times as somewhat childish; and not "real world" enough for this reader. Had Lashner provided the same level of attention to character development and prose as he provides in his books featuring Victor Carl, Blood And Bone could easily have been worthy of a 4-star rating and possibly a 5-star rating.
