Donoghue has based her new novel on real events that happened in San Francisco in 1876 and real characters, notably the trio of Parisians, former circus performers, at the heart of this novel. Blanche, Arthur and Ernest have a nice set-up, if you think that Blanche works as an exotic dancer and whore to keep her lover Arthur nice, that is. It's the day when Blanche gets mown down by a young woman dressed as a man, and riding a stolen bicycle that upsets everything. Jenny Bonnet was her name, (she existed) and the two women become friends much to Arthur's dislike...

I found this novel rather confusing to read at times, as it jumps about from the opening murder, back in time, forwards in time to after the murder, and all in between. Written in the present tense from Blanche's PoV, it was as messy as her petticoats in its structure. And flighty Blanche is such a fusspot, always moaning and er, fussing, I never took to her, and it was the charismatic Jenny that kept me reading. It was ambitious in scope, but never quite settled to its central plot for me.
