JAWS is the film responsible for the term 'Blockbuster'. A stunning piece of action/adventure film-making that stays in the mind long after its over, and not necessarily because of the horror and the fear (though that is part of it)but because of the great writing and performances. These are fully rounded characters - so much so, that the danger they face is very real. Steven Spileberg's direction is masterful - bringing out great suspense, humanity and humour to the whole piece. Every component works, and there are no glaringly obvious references to the 1970's, when the film is set, apart from some obvious hair/fashion styles, so it feels almost timeless. Which is how all great films feel. Even the mechanical shark, so problematic during the shoot for its refusal to work, does not seem quite so 'fake' to me, simply because its extreme toothy grin and lifeless eyes make me see it as the embodiment of evil - the devil in the deep blue sea. I look forward to the HD transfer, as well as the special features and can't wait to hear THAT music coming crystal clear out of my sound system. All together now - DA-DUM....DA-DUM....
