Customer Review

on 4 January 2006
It's good to see that in less than 10 years of being a solo artist, Ian already has amassed a big enough collection of tracks in order to be able to put out a greatest hits collection and now this accompanying DVD.
It must be said that Ian has some very innovative videos to accompany his singles. Of the 13 promo videos presented here (from a total of 20 available tracks - and no, I haven't counted F.E.A.R twice!) only 2 of the videos feature what you would call a performance video (i.e. standing about playing instruments).
Keep What Ya Got features Noely G on guitar on the video and Time Is My Everything is taken from a gig, but other than that the videos pretty much all have some sort of story element, with a couple of videos cut with Ian standing/sitting and singing.
Things kick off with My Star, a very strange video with what I assume are lots of strange metaphors for things (see the young girl pulling some eggs out from under her skirt!). I don't dare to ask...
Further bizarreness follows in the shape of Love Like A Fountain and it's strange double-team special effects (is that a whole bunch of Carlos Castaneda references I see? - look him up!), Dolphins Were Monkeys follows suit with what must be some further references to some mystical storybook I haven't read.
Crazy videos come in the guise of Golden Gaze, directed by the "used-to-be-funny" Dom Joly, also F.E.A.R. which sees Ian riding a far too small bicycle around the streets of London's Soho district. There's a whole bunch of other videos mixed in there as well, with varying levels of weirdness and Ian clowning around, Can't See Me and Whispers in particular, which look like they cost about £50 to make. None of yer flash Love Spreads style videos here matey !! (sarcasm...)
As well as the promo videos there is 6 "live" tracks, although 3 are unfortunately Top Of The Pops appearances and so not really live at all. I think one TOTP track would have been quite enough for me, thank you very much, but the one I really wanted here - the famous My Star egg chucking appearance - isn't even on here !! Doh !! Talk about not knowing what your fans want.
Other (real) live tracks come from Later With Jools Holland and from This Is Dom Jolly, but they are disappointing as Ian's voice is buried way low in the mix and can't be heard very well. Anyone who has seen Ian live will know how many problems this guy has with sound, it really needs to be properly sorted once and for all.
Overall a pretty decent package here, but I'm only giving it 3 stars because a bunch of promo videos is not something you would come back to watch time and time again - as with so many bands, they've missed a good opportunity and really should have tagged a much bigger and better quality bunch of TV appearances. There's plenty out there, such as Ice Cold Cube which was done on MTV years ago with Aziz on guitar.
Roll on the rumoured live DVD...
