Customer Review

on 26 August 2012
Having purchased Flavell's other work - the very useful 'Dictionary of Word Origins' - I had been bitten by the etymology bug and bought this one. Whereas the other book works much like a dictionary, this one takes you on a slightly different journey. It pinpoints specific, important and defining moments in our cultural past, provides a short historical overview and then explores a number of words and phrases relevant to that moment in time.

Well written, informative and lots of fun.
