Although Tom Russell is a songwriter with his heart in the right place (singing up for the downtrodden, and particularly so-called 'illegals'), few of the covers on this album really do him justice. I suppose that's always the way with so-called 'tribute' albums! For example, getting Dave Van Ronk to croak through 'The Outcaste' was not a good idea. However, the album is probably worth it for 'Veteran's Day' by Johnny Cash, 'Gallo del Cielo' by Joe Ely, and a bonus track of Tom Russell himself singing 'Who's Gonna Build your Wall?' (really sticking it to Republican America).
So, three stars for the songs and sentiments, but not the full five owing to the variable quality.
