Is it one to stand the test of time?,
This review is from: No Angel (Audio CD)
I bought this album when it first came out after hearing her single, "Here With Me" on the T.V. programme Roswell High. I instantly loved that single and so bought the album on a whim purely based on my love of that one track.
Well, it's been a few years since I last sat down and listened to NO ANGEL, recently rediscovering it at the back of my cupboard, I wondered if I would still enjoy it as much as I originally did.
"Here With Me", the opening track and the reason I got the CD, remains to be a favourite with me. It is a lovely ballad, one that I would not tire of.
"Hunter" and "Don't Think of Me" are also two good songs; not ballads really as they are about love on the rocks, almost sticking two fingers up at the person in question.
"All You Want" is also OK. The chorus is far better than the verses, more catchy and slightly more uptempo.
"Take My Hand" is also one of the most noteable on the album. Starting off gently, like many of her songs do, but then building up to something more layered and constructed. Quite sweet lyrics too.
The only thing with this album, and the reason why I have only given 3 stars instead of higher, is that since those years have passed, this is no longer an album that I would reach for a lot of the time. As another reviewer has said, after a while her voice starts to grate on you. And the fact that a lot of the songs sound very similar at the very beginning of the travk, only gaining some kind of distinguishing element towards the chorus.
While "Here With Me" shall always be a favourite of mine, unfortunately time has turned my love afair with Dido turn into a simmering interest.
