This review is from: Classic Dracula Collection [DVD] (DVD)
This box set of four Dracula movies is well worth investing in and the movies featured are;
DRACULA(1931) This is the classic Bela Lugosi version and the first 20 minutes are on a par with the first two Universal Frankenstein movies. Yes, it really does start out that good with a superb atmosphere and a memorable introduction to the Count. It does lose it's way when the action moves to Whitby and the movie feels like a stage play at times but on the whole this deserves it's classic status.
DRACULA(SPANISH VERSION 1931) Filmed at exactly the same time as the Lugosi version this is a curio and pretty good. It is longer than the other movie and can drag at times but it is definitely worth watching.
DRACULA'S DAUGHTER(1936) I liked this quite a lot and mainly because of the female performances. A good script, a nice atmosphere and a different take on the vampire legend. Otto Kruger is OK as Jeffrey Garth but a little stern but Gloria Holden is great as the Countess. There is excellent support from Margaret Churchill as the impish Janet and a very good performance from Nan Grey as the lovely but vulnerable Lili. An underrated movie this.
HOUSE OF DRACULA(1945) This is a reasonably entertaining movie that is really an excuse to fit in all of the famous monsters such as Dracula, the Wolfman and Frankenstein's monster. Throw into the mix an insane professor and just about everything is included. It's not bad, not a classic but it's OK.
There are some extras including trailers and a good documentary and this is a very good package overall and outstanding value.
