Lady In Autumn,
By A Customer
This review is from: Lady in Autumn (Audio CD)
This was the first Lady Day record I bought and the beginning of my love affair with the voice. This CD is worth owning for the first 6 tracks alone which are live recordings from the Jazz at The Philarmonic series of concerts at Carneige Hall. To say they are awesome would be an understatement. Many people say her voice was in decline after the war years, but thse live recordings, taken from 44 i think, are absolutely divine. Never mind the crackles and primitive sound recording, turn up the volume and prepare to be 'blown away' !! The remainder of the CD is Lady with small combos in the 50's - demonstrating that even though her voice was in serious decline, her artistry was not and she can still convey a song with immense feeling. I read something the other day where the writer was discussing Billie and Ella Fitzgerald. He said the difference between the two of them was that when Ella sings "my man hasleft me" one assumes he's popped out for a loaf of bread!
