This review is from: Sony S380 Blu-ray Player - Instant Internet Video Playback, With Media Remote and USB (Electronics)
This is my first Blu-ray player after deliberating for a year or two. It certainly does the job. Picture and sound are both pin sharp. It does a fine job of upscaling older DVDs to near HD quality. I tested it with a region one version of Star Wars (don't laugh), the difference was noticeably better after being previously played on a Sony Home Theatre DVD system, (Picture brighter and colours more vivid). Previous reviews say this machine is noisy when playing discs but I have to say mine is as quiet as a mouse. The only noise I can hear is when the disc is loading, (like ALL disc players), after that, nothing!. It can easily be modified to play discs from all regions using a "one for all" remote, mine's a "Kamelion" and it took only five minutes. Plenty of places online to find the hack for free. Shame it doesn't have an optical out for the surround setup, the digital-out works just as well, I just like plenty of options when I mix and match separates and stuff. I'm only filling the living room with sound, not the Albert Hall!. I'm not a technical buff or a Hi-Fi snob, but I appreciate a good viewing and listening experience. I don't readily write reviews unless I am greatly impressed or greatly unimpressed, so I hope my thoughts were helpful to you. Ooooh!.....nearly forgot, I upgraded a version of "CONTACT", Jodie Foster, (don't laugh again, I like it!), from DVD to Bluray and the difference can only be described as "astonishing". I hope I didn't lose any credibility by sharing this last comment with you......enjoy your Bluray player........... UPDATE 23/Sept/11.......Have now had this connected to router. iplayer works a dream, lovefilm is also very good. There are lots of goodies to watch online which is a nice bonus as I only bought the player to watch blurays. It took literally 5 minutes to update the firmware which was a doddle. Buying Sony 820 AV Amp in a couple of weeks to get benefit of Dolby TRU Surround, wife pannicking but it'll be OK. Thanks for reading. 17/Nov/2011. Well, what do you know, another update!!!. It has been hooked up to my shiny new Sony 820 amplifier. OMG!!!, just when I thought surround sound was run of the mill and pretty good, this configuration of the Sony s380 bluray player and the Sony 820 amp really ramped up the experience. You MUST upgrade to a decent player and amp. Enough said, have fun....GB

Mr. R. Haden says:
Hello there, i bought an 820 amp too. The sound is superb, but i have a query, which i wonder if anyone can answer ? I have a small collection of SACD'S ( this is the reason i purchased the player ) The only thing is, i can't tell the difference between ordinary CD'S & SACD'S ( and i could on my old amp ) I'm sure it's set up correctly i.e. DSD Multi displays on my TV screen and i have the amp set to HD DCS. Any feedback would be much appreciated.
