This popular HTV drama aired at 6pm on Saturday evenings in the mid eighties and stood out from the usual Larson or Spelling productions like an Armani suit in a dole queue. The Robin Hood legend gets a Burtonesque makeover giving it a dark undertone that probably was not suitable for family viewing just after Dickie Davis had finished on World of Sport. Robin and the small band of merry men (Judi Trott and a young Ray Winstone also feature) were guided by the spirit of Hearn the Hunter. In this retelling of the legend it was not just the Sheriff that Robin battled but demonic posession, witch craft and the Knights Templar to comment on just three of the wonderful storylines. So this was a little different to Automan on the other channel! Perhaps the most interesting part of this series was that half way through Robin of Locksley (Michael Praed) was replaced by Robert of Huntingdon (Jason Connery) in effect the lead role was given to another actor a Neighbours. The real reason for this was that Praed had been offered the Role of the Prince of Maldova in Dynasty! Despite this in my opinion the show got even better. If action, romance, fantasy and history with a dark touch added in butters your muffin then this is the one for you. Yet another point of note is that many of the stories were written by and starred Richard O Brien.
