Is this the ending you wanted Stephen?,
This review is from: 1408 - Director's Cut Edition [DVD] (DVD)
I saw Stephen King on interview when this film was doing the rounds last year and he mentioned the ending being one that he was really proud and happy with. I went with my hubby to see it at the cinema and was enthralled by it. (I being a HUGE King nut). My hubby was suitably scared and so was I and we vowed to buy it as soon as it was released on dvd.
Imagine my horror, (and not because of the content of the film you understand), when I sat my teenagers down to watch it and it had a completely different ending to that shown in the cinema! Ok so the box says director's cut but that usually means we get the choice right? The cinematic version is nowhere to be seen at all on the dvd, and I've been through all the special features. The 'new' ending delivered a 'jump' to my kids but I was just left feeling cheated.
The story is actually creepier on audio tape read by King himself. It's on a set called Blood And Smoke and it's well worth the time and effort. Cusack does an extremely good job in the film and I have given stars to show that and nothing else, sorry Stephen. People should know when to leave well enough alone, King wrote a perfectly good ending and should've stuck to it.
